Andersson’s Gate to Etosha National Park - Main Southern Entrance & Access to Okaukuejo

Andersson’s Gate is the busiest and most commonly used entrance into Etosha National Park. It is found on the southern side of the park, close to the town of Outjo, and only about 17 kilometres from Okaukuejo Camp. This makes it the main point of entry for most travellers, especially those driving in from Windhoek or Swakopmund.

The gate is named after Charles Andersson, a Swedish explorer who, together with Francis Galton, was one of the first Europeans to travel through the Etosha region in the 1850s. His journeys helped introduce the area to the outside world, and naming the gate after him highlights both the history and the discovery of Etosha.

The tarred road leading to the gate is in good condition, making it very convenient for self-drive visitors as well as organised safari groups. On arrival, visitors stop at the reception where park staff check permits, collect entrance fees if not prepaid, and give important instructions. These include the rules for driving inside the park, speed limits, safety guidelines, and reminders about gate opening and closing times.

Before even reaching the main camp, many travelers notice wildlife close to the fence line. It is common to spot zebras, giraffes, springboks, or even jackals along this section of the road, which makes the journey exciting right from the start.

Once inside the park, the road from Andersson’s Gate goes straight to Okaukuejo Camp, which is the administrative centre of Etosha. Okaukuejo is also famous for its floodlit waterhole where animals can be seen both during the day and at night. Because of this direct connection, Andersson’s Gate is very popular for visitors who want quick access to accommodation, food, fuel, and excellent game viewing opportunities in one place.

The gate itself is carefully managed. Staff members make sure vehicles and visitors follow park regulations that are meant to protect both wildlife and the environment. While Andersson’s Gate does not have many facilities, it provides a small rest area, clean toilets, and sometimes a vendor selling drinks or snacks. During busy months, queues may form at the entrance, so arriving early is often advised.
