Etosha National Park in June - Start of the Dry Season Safari

In June, winter and the dry season are fully in place in Etosha National Park. The weather is cool, clear, and dry, with very little rain. Humidity levels are low, making the air crisp and fresh.

Mornings and evenings can be cold, with temperatures between 5°C and 10°C. Daytime temperatures are mild, usually ranging from 20°C to 25°C. Winds are generally light to moderate but may become stronger in the mornings and late afternoons, often coming from the southeast.

By this month, most grasses and trees have dried out, creating open spaces where it is easier to see animals. As natural water becomes scarce, wildlife gathers more often around the main waterholes. This increases the chances of seeing animals at close range.

June is a good month for relaxed exploration and game viewing. Self-drive safaris on the park’s gravel roads are enjoyable, as many animals are seen near water sources. Lions, hyenas, and other predators are still active in the cooler early mornings, so guided or self-guided drives at that time are rewarding.

The clear skies and mild weather also make bird-watching enjoyable. Birds such as raptors, lilac-breasted rollers, and kori bustards can often be seen. Evenings can be spent at floodlit waterholes in camps like Okaukuejo and Halali, where antelope, elephants, and rhinos often visit to drink.

The soft winter light and long viewing hours provide excellent opportunities for photography. Warm layers such as a jacket, scarf, and gloves are needed for early morning drives, as the cold can be sharp. By midday, the weather is more comfortable for outdoor activities.

Since June marks the start of the busy dry season, booking accommodation in advance is advised, especially at the popular rest camps. Wildlife is most active early in the morning and late in the afternoon, so these are the best times to go out.

Binoculars and a camera with a zoom lens are helpful for spotting and photographing animals and birds across the wide open plains. June offers calm weather, good wildlife activity, and comfortable conditions for spending long hours in the park.
