Etosha National Park in October - Safari, Wildlife & Travel Tips

October is the last month of the dry season in Etosha National Park and is also one of the hottest months of the year. Daytime temperatures often reach 36°C or more, while nights stay warm, usually between 16°C and 20°C.

Light to moderate breezes are common throughout the month. In the afternoons, these winds often grow stronger, lifting dust and adding to the dry conditions. By the end of October, there may be a few signs of the coming rainy season. Humidity begins to rise slightly after staying low for many months, and clouds may build up in the late afternoons.

The park’s appearance changes in small but clear ways during this time. Vegetation is thin, making it easier to spot wildlife. The huge, open salt pan stands out across the landscape, with little plant cover to hide it. After months without rain, the soil is dry and hard, many trees have lost their leaves, and most grasses are brown and brittle.

Water and food are limited, so animals gather more often at the remaining waterholes. These areas can become places of tension between predators and prey, giving visitors a chance to see hunting attempts or close encounters.

Photography in October can be very rewarding, as the open views provide clear shots, and the early morning and late afternoon light gives warm colors. Birdwatchers may also notice the first summer migrant birds arriving as the seasons begin to shift.

Visitors can enjoy relaxing activities near the camps, such as evening drinks while watching the sunset or stargazing under the wide Namibian night sky. However, the heat at this time of year requires careful planning.

Early mornings and late afternoons are the best times for game drives, as animals are more active and temperatures are cooler. The middle of the day is better spent resting in shaded areas, swimming if the camp has a pool, or simply enjoying the peaceful atmosphere while waiting for the heat to ease before heading out again.
