Halali Region in Etosha National Park - Wildlife, Waterholes & Halali Camp

The Halali Region is in the centre of Etosha National Park, located between the well-known areas of Okaukuejo in the west and Namutoni in the east. Its central position makes it an ideal stopping point for travellers who want to explore the whole park without rushing.

The name “Halali” comes from the call of the German hunting horn, which was traditionally used to signal the end of a hunt. Today, the area is a place of conservation where animals are protected and visitors can enjoy watching them in their natural habitat.

Halali is known for its calm atmosphere and good opportunities to see wildlife. The landscape here is a mix of mopane woodland, rocky dolerite outcrops, and open clearings. Compared to the wide open plains in the south, this region offers more shaded areas and a quieter environment.

The main accommodation in the area is Halali Camp, which sits at the base of a rocky hill. One of its main attractions is the Moringa waterhole, which is floodlit at night. Visitors can often watch leopards, hyenas, elephants, and black rhinos coming to drink, especially after sunset.

Unlike the busier camps of Okaukuejo or Namutoni, Halali tends to attract travellers who prefer fewer crowds and a slower, more relaxed safari experience.

Several of the park’s well-known waterholes are close to Halali Camp, including Goas, Rietfontein, Nuamses, and Salvadora. These spots draw many animals, especially during the dry season when natural water is limited. Predators such as leopards are often seen near the rocky areas, while lions can be spotted near the open pans.

Its central location makes Halali a good base for day trips. Visitors can easily travel east to the lush Fischer’s Pan or west to the open savannas around Okaukuejo.

Although the area has a simpler style compared to luxury lodges, Halali still provides comfortable rooms and chalets, a restaurant, a small shop, and a swimming pool. This ensures guests have all the essential facilities they need for a pleasant and enjoyable stay while being close to nature.
