What to Wear in Etosha National Park - Clothing & Footwear Guide

When planning a trip, it is important to pack the right clothing based on your destination and the local weather. A visit to Etosha means packing clothes that suit the climate, the bush, and outdoor activities.

The goal is to balance comfort, protection, and practicality, while also respecting safari etiquette. Whether you are going on a self-drive or a guided game drive, what you wear can affect your overall experience.

Etosha National Park has changing weather conditions depending on the time of year. This makes it important to check the weather for the month you plan to visit. Some days can be hot and dry, while mornings and evenings can be surprisingly cool, especially from May to September.

During this period, warm clothing is needed for the cold hours. From November to April, the park is hotter, so lightweight clothing that covers your skin is better for sun protection. A T-shirt or light cotton top with a long-sleeved shirt can help shield you from the sun, and a fleece or light jacket is useful for chilly morning drives.

Long pants made from breathable fabric are ideal as they protect you from sunburn, insects, and scratches from bushes when walking near camps or viewpoints.

Etosha’s landscape is filled with earthy tones, so it is best to pack clothes in khaki, beige, olive, or brown shades. These colors help you blend into the surroundings and are less likely to attract insects. Avoid wearing white, as it shows dust easily, and stay away from bright colors such as yellow, red, or neon shades, as they may scare off animals.

For footwear, pack closed shoes like lightweight hiking boots or sturdy trainers for walks around campsites or short bush walks. Sandals are fine for relaxing at the lodge or camp but are not suitable for walks or game drives.
