Okondeka Waterhole is a natural spring in Etosha National Park, located about 20 kilometres north of Okaukuejo. It sits on the western edge of the Etosha Pan and is one of the key wildlife spots in this part of the park.
The spring provides water for animals to drink, especially during the long dry season from May to October, when natural water sources are limited. Unlike the floodlit waterholes near rest camps, Okondeka has no developments or artificial lights, which makes it a very raw and natural place to visit.
This waterhole is well known as a predator hotspot. Lions are often seen in the area, resting in the shade or lying close to the open ground, waiting for herds of prey. Visitors may also spot hyenas moving around, searching for food.
Prey animals such as zebras, wildebeest, springboks, giraffes, and elephants regularly gather here to drink. Ostriches are also a common sight, walking across the dry plains around the waterhole.
The open surroundings give visitors very wide views of both the waterhole and the Etosha Pan. Early mornings and late afternoons are the best times to visit, as the light is softer for photography and the chances of spotting hunting activity or animal interactions are higher. Many photographers and nature enthusiasts choose Okondeka for these reasons, as it combines striking scenery with exciting wildlife behavior.
Okondeka also offers a sense of quiet and remoteness. Because it is in the western section of the park, it is usually less crowded than the busier areas around Okaukuejo. There are no formal seating areas or visitor facilities.
Instead, travelers remain in their vehicles at a safe distance, watching the animals without disturbing them. This simple setup helps keep the waterhole’s wild character intact and allows guests to feel close to the natural rhythm of the park.
For travelers who want a calm experience away from large crowds, Okondeka is a rewarding stop. Its mix of open views, predator activity, and peaceful setting makes it one of the most memorable waterholes in Etosha for those who enjoy watching wildlife in a natural environment.
