The Halali Waterhole, also called Moringa Waterhole, is one of the main attractions inside Etosha National Park. It is found within Halali Camp, which lies between Okaukuejo and Namutoni. Unlike some of the busier waterholes near other camps, Halali offers a quieter and more relaxed setting. The waterhole is built against a dolomite hill and surrounded by mopane woodland, giving it a natural backdrop.
One of the special features of Halali Waterhole is its design. Visitors sit in an elevated viewing area built into the rocks, looking down over the water. The area is floodlit at night, allowing people to safely watch wildlife after sunset. The lights create a calm mood and make it possible to see animals that are active during the night.
Many species come to drink here throughout the day and evening. Elephants are often seen bathing or cooling themselves in the water. Black rhinos are regular visitors, especially at night, making it one of the best places to see them in Etosha.
Spotted hyenas also come frequently, and sometimes leopards appear quietly in the late evening or early morning. For bird lovers, owls and nightjars are common, adding to the experience with their calls and movements in the dark.
The charm of Halali Waterhole is its calm atmosphere. Visitors can sit for hours without interruption, simply waiting and watching as animals arrive and leave. The pattern often changes: first antelopes like springboks and impalas may graze near the edge, then a herd of elephants might approach, followed by a hyena crossing through. This constant change keeps the experience interesting and rewarding.
The waterhole is only a short walk from the main camp, so guests can easily visit early in the morning, during the day, or late at night. Compared to Okaukuejo Waterhole, which attracts many tourists at once, Halali provides a slower pace with fewer people. Its central location also makes it a good base for exploring both the eastern and western parts of the park.
For travelers who want a peaceful and steady wildlife-viewing spot, Halali Waterhole is an excellent choice, offering memorable encounters in a quiet setting.
