Etosha National Park Seasons & Climate - Best Time to Visit

Like many other national parks, Etosha National Park has a semi-arid climate with two main seasons: the dry season and the wet season. The dry season lasts from May to October, while the wet season runs from November to April.

The dry season is the most popular time for safaris. During these months, Etosha receives little or no rain. Because of this, most animals gather at waterholes to drink, giving visitors a good chance to see many species in one place.

The vegetation is thinner and more open, which makes it easier to spot wildlife compared to the rainy season. Daytime temperatures are generally warm, between 25°C and 30°C, but mornings and evenings can be quite cold, sometimes dropping to about 10°C. Travelers are advised to carry warm clothing for early game drives and evenings at camp.

The wet season starts when the first rains arrive in November and lasts until March or early April. Rainfall is not constant but often comes in heavy, short thunderstorms that quickly change the atmosphere of the park.

After the rains, Etosha transforms into a green landscape, with fresh grass and blooming plants. The scenery looks very different compared to the dry months. Daytime temperatures during this period rise above 30°C, and the air can feel more humid.

The wet season is also the calving period when many antelopes, zebras, and other animals give birth. This provides plenty of food for predators, which can make sightings very exciting.

Birds are especially active, and migratory species arrive to take advantage of the wetter environment.

Because food and water are more widely available, animals are spread out across the park, making sightings less concentrated than in the dry season.

Etosha’s climate makes it suitable for visiting throughout the year. Each season offers something special. The dry season is the best for seeing large numbers of animals around waterholes, while the wet season is perfect for travelers who enjoy quieter parks, greener scenery, bird-watching, and observing newborn animals.
